Iran's Puppet Show

The President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is a tough talking sabre rattler. He threatens and menaces the free world and Iran's neighbors, especially Israel. He says Israel should be eradicated. But, in reality, is he nothing more than a powerless front man for the real power brokers? They say - "jump", he asks - "how high?" How should we view Ahmadinejad?

Looking at the political structure of Iran we see some important clues to his power or impotence. Keep in mind that Iran is really a theocracy hiding behind a facade of psuedo-democracy.

Fact: Ahmadinejad does not control Iran's nuclear program, it's military, or how Iran works in world politics and policy.

Fact: Ahmadinejad is powerless over Iran's internal political process. Parliament may pass bills but they do not become law without passing through the 12 member Guardian Council and it's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In the 2005 election, Khamenei and the Council disqualified 99% of the candidates to make sure that Ahmadinejad would be President.

So, what are we to take from the behind the scenes power-brokering?

Because Ahmadinejad is Khamenei's "boy", we can expect Ahmadinejad to be around for a long, long, time to come. He will be menacing all comers at the behest of Khamenei and the Council. He will deflect world media away from looking closer at Khamenei and the Council. So far, it's working.

Just remember, when Ahmadinejad speaks it is Khamenei and the Council speaking. The leaders of the world know this. They know that, when they are dealing with Ahmadinejad, they are really dealing with Khamenei and the Council.

Ahmadinejad is dangerous because he is not afraid to spout the "party line", no matter how it plays on the world stage.
